Scope and Content

This folder consists of eight items: 1. "Amazing!": Single page. Dated Thurs. July 20, 1961. Nineteenth-century broadside-style announcement of the docking of the SS Canberra at the Port of San Francisco. Invites residents to celebrations including a parade, free food and tours of the vessel. 2. "Maiden Voyage": Multi-page, part color large-format periodical. Souvenir from the SS Canberra featuring articles about the vessel's construction and launch and its maiden voyage. Provides future information as well. 3. SS Canberra, Provisional Plan of First Class Accommodation: Single, chart-sized page, dated Dec. 1960. Deck plans for the vessel SS Canberra. 4. Passenger List, Maiden Voyage, SS Canberra from North America, July, 1961: Multi-page stapled booklet, dated 1961. Details names of passengers aboard the SS Canberra for her maiden voyage. 5. Canberra News: Single page, newspaper-style onboard news flyer. Dated Wed. July 19, 1961. Features daily news for England, Australia, THe US and the world. Back of flyer provides itinerary for daily events aboard the vessel. 6. "She's a Capital Ship": Single page, torn from "Australian Travel News", dated Sept. 1961. Photo of the vessel Canberra docked at Circular Quay, Canberra. 7. "A Gold Rush Hello to SS Canberra": Single page torn from Fri. July 21, 1961 Issue of the San Francisco Examiner. Article discusses the vessel's arrival and reception in San Francisco Bay. 8. "Canberra Bids SF Adieu": Single page torn from Sat. July 22, 1961 edition of the San Francisco News-Call Bulletin. Article about the departure of the vessel Canberra from the Port of San Francisco. Photo depicts ship crossing under the Golden Gate Bridge.
