Scope and Content

Original printed postcards with black and white photographs of the survivors of Clipperton Island with handwritten comments by Walker P. Rodman detailing the condition of the people rescued from a mining settlement. Note: The U.S.S. Yorktown operated off the coast of Mexico from January 1914 through August 1917, with brief breaks in service for repairs at Mare Island and maneuvers off San Diego. On July 18, 1917, the Yorktown rescued the last surviving members of an abandoned guano mining settlement on Clipperton Island, off the coast of Mexico. From a peak population of roughly 100 in 1915, only four women and six children survived.
