Replica Church or votive model

Name/Title

Replica Church or votive model

Entry/Object ID

1982.196.001

Description

Model sailing ship in the "church" or "votive" style. Possibly crafted in the early-to-mid-nineteenth century as an imitation of a much earlier model in the "votive model" style. Note the presence of anachronistic features such as gun ports. See further information in Mains'l Haul XXIII (no. 1, Fall, 1986): 11-13. Note in particular the dating and identification offered by Dr. C.A. Stern: "...this is a model of a Northern European ship of the middle 15th century, more military than merchant, and was made sometime in the early to mid-19th century."
