Scope and Content

Folder contains three items: 1.Plan of Third Class Passenger Accommodations: Single-page folded bicolor brochure dated Jan. 1937, (reprint of Feb. 1936 Issue) details the deckplans for each of the B,C,D and E decks aboard RMS Scythia. Title page features two black and white photos of the lounge area and promenade deck. Text attempts to convey that travelling as a third class passenger offers opportunities for comraderie with fellow passengers and access to childcare. Back cover details the British and seafaring heritage of the Cunard White Star Lines' individual sailors and crew, perhaps to foster a sense of blue-collar solidarity with potential third-class passengers. 2.Scythia & Samaria, Plan of Cabin Class: Multi-page folded, color brochure, dated Mar. 1938 (reprint of Aug. 1937 Issue). Details deckplans for each of the Promenade, A,B and D decks aboard the Scythia and her sistership, the Samaria. Centerfold features an (Edwardian era?) hand-tinted photo of the Scythia underway ashore what appears to be Cobh, Cty. Cork Ireland. High quality black and white photos of facilities including the gymnasium and smoking room are interspersed amongst deckplans and small blocks of editorial text. Editorial text stresses the quality of the accommodations aboard any of the Cunard White Star Line vessels, by highlighting the interchangeability of the Scythia and the Samaria. Cover features a bright graphic print of the forward-hull of one of the ships, from a ground-level perspective. 3.Scythia Plan of Tourist Class: multi-page folded part-color brochure dated Feb. 1938 (reprint of Oct. 1936 Issue). Details deckplans for each of the Promenade, E, C and D decks aboard the RMS Scythia. Centerfold features hybrid illustration/photo of the Scythia underway. Hull, lifeboats and smokestack appear to have been highlighted by illustration over an original photo of the ship the Hull at the waterline and the smokestack are hand colored red. Small to medium black and white photos depict appointments and facilities including: a typical stateroom, and the Lounge. Others feature passengers and crew. Cover features a bright, quad-color graphic depicting the Scythia underway from a 45-degree perspective.
