Scope and Content

This series consists of one folder: Royal Cruise Line was established by Greek magnate Pericles Panagopolous in 1971. The line was somewhat different than most operated out of Greece, in that, Panagopolous chose to leave the state-ensured monopoly of Greek Cruise Lines operating in the Aegean, to sail in foreign waters therefore risking harsh competition. The line operated a small fleet including its two comissioned-flagships, the Royal Odyssey and the Golden Odyssey, to ports in the Mexican Riviera, Caribbean and West Indies ports in the winter, to European, Aegean and Mediterranean ports in the summer. Panagopolous sought, primarily, business from wealthy American potential passengers who could afford to fly overseas to the port of departure for their cruises. Royal Cruise Line was sold to Kloster Cruises in 1989, after financial strain due to the 1970s oil crisis. Kloster Cruises themselves, went bankrupt in 1995 and the former Royal Cruise Line vessels were sold to Norwegian Cruise Lines, along with the rest of Kloster Cruises' assets.
