Berkeley Baggage Cart The ferryboat Berkeley was built in 1898, well before the automobile came to dominate transportation in the United States, and she was designed to carry only passengers and baggage, not cars. Her decks were often crowded with passengers connecting to east- and south-bound trains in Oakland. Horses and wagons hauled baggage aboard until about 1937 when they were replaced by tractors and baggage carts. The first carts were made entirely of wood, including wheels and spokes. Later wheels were fashioned of steel and banded with rubber. The metal and plywood type of cart you see here was brought into service around 1945. Ten to fifteen of these carts would be connected together and towed aboard. They would be lined up from one end of the ferry to the other, two abreast, on both sides of the main deck.
