SS Britanis life vest Built in 1931 for Matson Lines as the SS Monterey for South Pacific service from the US West Coast, the Britanis was one of the longest-lived passenger ships of all time. After heroic service as a troop carrier in World War II, the Monterey was renamed and rebuilt by Matson Lines in 1956 as the Matsonia, then renamed Lurline in 1963. In 1970, she was sold to Chandris Lines (the original parent company of Celebrity Cruises) and renamed Britanis. Finally retired in 1996, she sank while under tow to the shipbreakers on October 21, 2000. Date: circa 1970 Loan from the Peter Knego/MidShipCentury collection
