SS Carnivale bell
In 1975, fledgling Carnival Cruise Line purchased the former SS Empress of Britain, a British liner built in 1956, to operate alongside her former fleet mate, the 1961-built SS Mardi Gras, the former Empress of Canada. These two ships became a huge success in Caribbean cruising, leading Carnival into its exponential expansion into the world’s largest cruise line empire that is today.
