The Standard Fruit and Steamship Co., now known as Dole, began as the Standard Fruit Company in 1924. The line shipped fruits from South American "Banana Republics" to the United States. In 1926, the Standard Fruit Company changed its name to the Standard Fruit and Steamship Company and in 1964 Castle and Cook Company acquired the line, and soon after absorbed the Dole company, changing its entire entity's name to the Dole Company.
The Standard Fruit and Steamship Co. possibly offered limited passenger accomodations aboard its freighters between the 1920s and the 1960s.
