Scope and Content

One volume of the Star of India harbor log prepared by Captain Kenneth D. Reynard (300 pages), includes handwritten entries on a daily basis. Entries begin on November 6, 1961 and end on December 31, 1964. The log describes efforts to restore and preserve the vessel and includes a list of crew and workers aboard the Star of India and identifies them by occupation, address, social security number and employment status. Log Entry Summary: November 6, 1961 through December 31, 1964, Star of India is in San Diego Harbor. Captain Kenneth D. Reynard is in charge of the effort to restore the Star of India. This log includes names of advisors, visitors, local journalists and reporters aboard the Star of India, names of individuals, companies and organizations doing the restoration work, supplying materials and equipment, details about the disassembly, identification, repair and/or replacement of specific parts of the vessel, donations of tools and equipment, general crew and volunteer duties, shipboard incidents and gatherings, descriptions of various meetings to promote the restoration project and daily weather conditions. On May 30, 1963, Star of India opens to the public from 10:00 in the morning to 8:00 in the evening. On this first day approximately 1200 people visit the vessel. On November 4, 1963, Star of India separates from her moorings and other connections due to the strong current from the vessel M.V. Loins Gate as it leaves the harbor under its own power. The Star of India drifts with the current and comes to rest at a right angle to the Embarcadero. The USS Chanticleer comes alongside and returns the Star of India to the dock. The ship receives minor damage to the gangway, water and telephone lines and forward main deck. The volume has several unused pages at the end of the document.
