Totem, Inuit carvedEntry/Object ID
1983.072.001Description
-carved animal totem made of soapstone
-from north of Yukon, likely Inuit
-flat on backside
Note: Soapstone is commonly used by Inuit for art market objects for trade, especially starting after 1950 when stationary communities began to be established. Older carved objects were traditionally made from ivory and wood, though wood does not last as long. Soapstone colors from black to light green are likely from the Arctic, and today reddish-colored soapstone is also imported from Brazil.Collection
