USCG Cutter Unimak (379) Deck with Sailors Clearing Ice Off Rigging and Chains
Entry/Object ID
P-10168
Description
AP News feature, March 20, 1955. Breaking ice on bow of cutter as shop returns to New York from a weather station off Labrador. Heavy seas are routine on weather duty. In winter they coat the cutter with ice, which reforms within hours of it being hacked away. The Coast Guard mans Atlantic Weather Stations by international agreement. In addition to helping forecast the weather the ship operates radio beacons for trans-Atlantic planes and are always ready for rescue missions.
