In July 1846, during the Mexican-American War, the sloop-of-war USS Cyane moored off La Playa at the entrance of San Diego Bay and landed a party of Marines to occupy Old Town San Diego. US forces were warmly welcomed by the largely pro-American local population. The American flag was raised without a shot being fired. The disembarkation of the Marines is portrayed in this historic painting by Carlton T. Chapman.
