Scope and Content

This series consists of one folder: The Ward Line was founded by James Otis Ward in 1841 as a freight consignment and passenger-liner company operating between New York, Nassau, Havana and Mexican ports. Most of the line's vessels were requisitioned during WWI; two of which became the first USSs Mercy and Comfort. After WWI, the US Government provided partial subsidy for the Ward Line to build several new passenger liners. The Ward Line suffered a major blow after its vessel SS Morro Castle caught fire, killing 137 people. This disaster, (as of 2011) had the largest fatality rate of any US-flagged merchant vessel. The company was bankrupted after the Morro Castle incident destroyed the line's public esteem, and after WWII, in which all of the line's remaining passenger vessels were requisitioned and not returned to the company.
