The White Star Line, aka the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company or the White Star Line of Boston Packets, was founded in 1869 in Liverpool to operate, primarily, between England and Australia. White Star Line, however, was best known for its transatlantic crossings. Its most famous vessel, the ill-fated liner, RMS Titanic was making a transalantic crossing at the time of her sinking.
The line was responsible for carrying large numbers of Irish immigrants to America on these transatlantic crossings in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The White Star Line was purchased, in the 1930s, by their competitor, Cunard, which still uses the "White Star" name, to refer to their superior level of service.Collection
