Nelson Aerials - Faulkland and Brandywine Springs Park, DE (color corrected)
This image is one of the more deteriorated of the set, and is Brandywine Springs Park taken with the airplane over Faulkland Heights (lower right corner). The development of Brandywine Springs Manor Park is at the image top with the park pavilion and parking lot in the upper left area.
In 1951 the State of Delaware bought the land and in 1956 Brandywine Springs State Park became the first state park in DE. In 1970 the park, not meeting new state park guidelines as a ‘destination location’ was transferred to New Castle County for a county park. The wide gap appearing to be a road running parallel to the creek and railroad tracks is the former route of the Peoples Railway trolley to Wilmington. The trolly made a U-turn just before Faulkland Road and the ‘high trestle bridge’ crossed both the creek and railroad parallel to the right edge of the image with the trolley route continuing to the bottom of the image to Wilmington (track path barely visible).Photograph Details
