Description

Nelson Aerials - bridges across Red Clay Creek just below Ashland, DE (color corrected) A third covered bridge once resided near Ashland at this location. The Wilmington & Western’s iron truss bridge is visible. In 1907, an iron truss bridge from the B&O’s Wheeling Division carrying the railroad over Pyles Fork stream replaced a wooden trestle that extended from the current iron truss bridge to beyond the right side of the image. It was the longest trestle on the line at that time. Parallel to the railroad bridge, was a Pratt Truss covered bridge, the third covered bridge at Ashland at the start of the 20th century, which carried Creek Road across the Red Clay.
