Description

Attached Writing: "The same scene, the same names -- but 40 years later. During October, the 1908 Glidden Tour to Bedford Springs, Pennsylvania, was relived by members of the Antique Automobile Club of America. A tire service truck again was provided by Firestone, the same as in 1908, to help motorists stranded with flats. From right to left in front of Kelsey three-wheeler are some old-timers: C.W. Kelsey (inventor and manufacturer of the Kelsey automobile) of Troy, New York; Major Augustus Post, New York City; George Crittenden, Brookline, Massachusetts. These three were on the original Glidden Tours between 1905 and 1910. Standing beside the 1903 Cadillac, in the center of the picture, is M.J. Duryea, president of the AACA and son of the inventor of the first automobile engine. Seated in the Cadillac are Mr. and Mrs. William F. Fleming, of Wycombe, Pennsylvania. A 1910 Ford is behind Mr. Duryea. Firestone New Bureau Akron, Ohio" The 1948 Glidden tour started in Philadelphia, probably the morning after the Antique Automobile Club of America Annual Fall Meet at the Devon Horse Show grounds. Clarence (with the Stanley Mountain Wagon) and Tom (with the 1914 Stanley Model 607) joined the other 40-plus cars on the tour at Fairmount Park with the route then following the Horseshoe Pike (Route 322) through Honey Brook and Ephrata to the first night’s destination at the Hotel Hershey. The tour continued on to Harrisburg, with lunch around Carlisle and where it entered the only section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike then open at Middlesex (this exit is now called Carlisle). The second day ended at the famous Bedford Springs Resort, the “summer White House” in President Buchanan’s time. The third day consisted of a parade through Bedford Springs with the tour retracing its steps to Harrisburg and on to Reading on the fourth and final day. See Tom Marshall’s "Weekly News, November 14, 2005" and "Weekly News, April 16, 2007" for more details about the 1948 tour and Augustus Post..
