Attached Writing: "This nostalgic scene was one of many relived during the 1948 revival of the famous Glidden Tours. At Bedford Springs, Pennsylvania, where original Glidden tourists stopped in 1908, the Antique Automobile Club of America assembled 50 early-vintage cars during October for the full-dress 40th Anniversary celebration. In the above picture scanning a road map is the well-known personage Major Augustus Post, who was on every one of the original Glidden Tours. On the tire pump is Walter Matter of Hawley, Pennsylvania, owner of the 1910 Model T Ford. In the background is C.W. Kelsey in one of his famous three-wheelers. Firestone again provided a tire service truck for the tourists, as it did in 1908. Firestone News Bureau Akron, Ohio"
The 1948 Glidden tour started in Philadelphia, probably the morning after the Antique Automobile Club of America Annual Fall Meet at the Devon Horse Show grounds. Clarence (with the Stanley Mountain Wagon) and Tom (with the 1914 Stanley Model 607) joined the other 40-plus cars on the tour at Fairmount Park with the route then following the Horseshoe Pike (Route 322) through Honey Brook and Ephrata to the first night’s destination at the Hotel Hershey. The tour continued on to Harrisburg, with lunch around Carlisle and where it entered the only section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike then open at Middlesex (this exit is now called Carlisle). The second day ended at the famous Bedford Springs Resort, the “summer White House” in President Buchanan’s time. The third day consisted of a parade through Bedford Springs with the tour retracing its steps to Harrisburg and on to Reading on the fourth and final day.
