Front Writing/ Back Writing: "This is believed to be Bland Hoke, owner of Bedford Springs, and his costumed employees in T. Clarence Marshall's 1915 Stanley Mountain Wagon on the 1948 Glidden Tour."
The 1948 Glidden tour started in Philadelphia, probably the morning after the Antique Automobile Club of America Annual Fall Meet at the Devon Horse Show grounds. Clarence (with the Stanley Mountain Wagon) and Tom (with the 1914 Stanley Model 607) joined the other 40-plus cars on the tour at Fairmount Park with the route then following the Horseshoe Pike (Route 322) through Honey Brook and Ephrata to the first night’s destination at the Hotel Hershey. The tour continued on to Harrisburg, with lunch around Carlisle and where it entered the only section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike then open at Middlesex (this exit is now called Carlisle). The second day ended at the famous Bedford Springs Resort, the “summer White House” in President Buchanan’s time. The third day consisted of a parade through Bedford Springs with the tour retracing its steps to Harrisburg and on to Reading on the fourth and final day.
