The Marshall Collection -- the Cars that “Came and Went” (Part One): From the time my father bought our Stanley Model 76 (still in the collection) in 1940 until 1965, he bought a lot of antique cars. Less than one-fourth are still at Auburn Heights. I bought seven, of which four are still part of the collection. FAHP bought one and had two donated. The list of those that passed through is divided in two parts. The 30 Stanleys (Part One) are presented this week. Dates are approximate. “R” designates in running condition when car was sold.

Work Report: On Tuesday, March 1, a record number of 21 volunteers turned out for the session: Jerry Novak (in charge), Alicia Battaglino, Jerry Lucas, Mark Russell, Ted Kamen, Bob Jordan, Steve Bryce, Dennis Tiley, Ken Hilbeck, Tim Ward, Anne Cleary, Brent McDougall, Mike Ciosek, John Schubel, Rich Gregg, Tom Sandbrook, Jay Williams, Mac Taylor, Edwin Paschall, Emil Christofano, and Mark Bodenstab.
The Model H-5 engine is almost ready to go in the car. The hanger strap/steam pipe connection was adjusted, and the copper cases around the cylinder block, as well as half of the differential cover were installed. On the “Auburn Valley,” paint was touched up on coach #870 (it still needs to be thoroughly cleaned), and Coach #852 has been lubricated, cleaned, and is ready to be returned to the tunnel. On the new plastic tank for Locomotive 401, an oval filler hole was cut in the top and adjustments were made for the tank to fit in the frame of the tender.
The Cretors popper was fired up by Rich Gregg and Steve Bryce, and lessons were given to Mark Bodenstab and Alicia Battaglino, so they can make popcorn on Steamin’ Days. On the Model 735, Tim Ward and helpers pasted more Fiberfrax around the boiler and then covered everything with a layer of Diplag.
Progress continued on the wiring project for the ’37 Packard. All the old wiring ends have been identified and marked, and the next step will be to remove all the old in preparation for installation of the new harness. More rags were cut for use in the shop. The old oily rags need to be properly disposed of.
No work session occurred Thursday night as many volunteers attended Tom’s lecture entitled “Selling American Innovation” at the Hagley Library.
Please remember that the new Wednesday afternoon work session will “kick in” this week. The session will be from 1:00 to 4:00, and Richard Bernard is in charge of the first one. The Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions will continue as in the past, from 6:30 to 9:30. Mark Russell is in charge Tuesday and Tom Marshall on Thursday. The A.V.R.R. operating group will be busy this month preparing for the Egg Hunts on March 25 and 26.
