Description

Context

These bottles were acquired by the Museum after they were deaccessioned by the Museums Division of the California State Parks. In 1853 Constantine Hering -- the 'Father of American Homeopathy and, in 1848, co-founder of the Homeopathic College of Pennsylvania (later Hahnemann Medical College) -- persuaded Francis E. Boericke and Adolph J. Tafel to enter into the manufacture and sale of homeopathic medicines. Over time, and keeping pace with the continued growth in the practice of homeopathy, Boericke & Tafel established pharmacies in Philadelphia, New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., Chicago, Cincinnati, and Minneapolis. In addition, the firm published over 100 book titles, approximately 85% of all homeopathic titles published in the United States.
