In honor of poet, Kathleen Flowers (1964 - 2009)
"My life was enriched by Kathleen’s friendship and continues today through her poetry. Our friendship dates back to 1988 when we were carefree. Our bond grew deep roots during her last four years of life. Although we lived in different states we managed to see each other often - either in the Bay Area or Portland. We collaborated on three different creative projects during that time, changing me forever. Kathleen’s passion for living was contagious. She showed me a courage and determination I had not witnessed before. This installation is dedicated to Kathleen - all the words are hers including the title." –Diane Jacobs
Wallace Baine writes after she passes, "Kathleen Flowers, the beloved bi-lingual elementary-school teacher and Santa Cruz poet, was born Kathleen O’Hearn. As a young woman, she refashioned her surname as “Flowers” because, she told a friend: “It’s both a noun and a verb.” It’s just the kind of response – with its sense of metaphorical spirituality and a love of language – that you would expect from a woman who was both a devout Buddhist and an accomplished poet. She received the first ever In Celebration of the Muse Chapbook Award in Santa Cruz to publish "Call it Gladness” in 2008.
Diane Jacobs is a UCSC alum (Porter '88) and lives and works in Portland, Oregon, with her family.
