Description

Joan of Arc (Jeanne d’Arc) Belgian Theatrical Release Poster Belgium, 1948 Offset lithograph on paper, 14 × 22 in. (36 × 56 cm) This original Belgian theatrical release poster was produced for the 1948 historical epic Joan of Arc, directed by Victor Fleming and starring Ingrid Bergman in the title role. Issued in French for Belgium’s Francophone market, the poster depicts Bergman in armor before a fleur-de-lis banner and a battlefield illuminated by flames, emphasizing Joan’s dual identity as military leader and religious martyr. The film was adapted from Maxwell Anderson’s Broadway play Joan of Lorraine, in which Bergman had also starred. It was Victor Fleming’s final completed film before his death in 1949 and was produced in Technicolor by Walter Wanger and distributed by RKO Radio Pictures. Although the film was not the commercial success its producers had hoped for, it received seven Academy Award nominations and won Oscars for Best Color Cinematography and Best Color Costume Design. Belgian posters are distinguished by their standardized 14 × 22 inch format, making them readily identifiable among European theatrical posters. Many featured artwork and layouts unique to Belgium rather than adaptations of American one-sheet designs, and French-language editions such as this were produced for exhibition in Belgium’s French-speaking regions.
