BCE 0200 - 0100 EUBOIA, Histiaia. 3rd–2nd c. BCE. AR Tetrobol. Wreathed Head of Nymph / Nymph Seated on Winged Galley Stern.Description
Histiaia Tetrobol (3rd–2nd centuries BCE)
Euboia, City of Histiaia
This silver tetrobol was struck at Histiaia on the island of Euboia during the Hellenistic period. The obverse presents the wreathed head of the local nymph Histiaia, rendered with a soft, idealized profile characteristic of late Classical and early Hellenistic civic coinage. On the reverse, the nymph appears seated on the stern of a galley adorned with a wing, a distinctive civic emblem that alludes to Histiaia’s maritime identity and strategic position along key Aegean sea routes. The compact flan and reduced weight standard reflect local monetary practices of the period. Catalogued in the BCD Euboia corpus (no. 402) and HGC 4 (no. 1525), this type is among the most recognizable and iconographically coherent issues of Euboian silver.Create Date
