CE 1307 Edward II (1307–1327 CE). AR Penny, London Mint.

Name/Title

CE 1307 Edward II (1307–1327 CE). AR Penny, London Mint.

Description

“Silver Penny of Edward II, London Mint” England, ca. 1307–1327 CE Hammered silver penny bearing the crowned facing portrait of Edward II on the obverse and a long cross with pellets on the reverse. The reverse inscription, CIVITAS LONDON, identifies the London mint. The extended cross design helped deter clipping of silver coinage and facilitated the cutting of pennies into smaller denominations for everyday exchange. Circulating during a period of political unrest, famine, and dynastic conflict, coins such as this formed the backbone of ordinary commerce in medieval England.
