CE 1920 50 Pfennig Notgeld Note: Frisian Tea PunchDescription
50 Pfennig Notgeld Note: Frisian Tea Punch
Niebüll, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, 20 April 1920
Paper emergency money
Issued by the municipality of Niebüll on 20 April 1920, this 50 Pfennig Notgeld note reflects the regional identity of North Frisia during the early Weimar period. One side identifies the note as a “Gutschein der Gemeinde Niebüll” and displays the local coat of arms with the Frisian motto “Liwer düüd as Slaw!” — “Better dead than a slave.” The illustrated side shows a seated man drinking tea punch beside a table and open window. The accompanying Frisian dialect text appears to say that a Frisian tea punch, taken in moderation, harms no one. Like many German Notgeld notes, it served as local emergency currency while also presenting regional language, domestic custom, folklore, and civic identity in miniature printed form.Create Date
