Japanese Occupation of Burma: Rupee Notes
Japanese Imperial Government, Burma, c. 1942–1944
Paper banknote; various denominations
After occupying Burma during World War II, Japanese authorities issued rupee-denominated notes to replace currency associated with British colonial rule. Burma had used a rupee-based monetary system because it had long been governed as part of British India before becoming a separate British colony in 1937. Japanese occupation notes kept the familiar rupee denomination and used English text, Western numerals, decorative borders, block letters, and local imagery such as temples and palm trees. These design choices made the notes legible within an economy already shaped by British colonial administration, while Japanese characters and the phrase “The Japanese Government” asserted the new occupying authority. The notes reflect Japan’s attempt to govern Burma through military occupation, economic control, and nominally independent wartime institutions.Create Date
