Name/Title

CE 1943 – Netherlands, German Occupation, Zinc 1 Cent

Description

Zinc 1 cent coin issued in the Netherlands in 1943 during the German occupation of the Second World War (1940–1945). Designed by Nico de Haas and struck at the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht. The obverse features a geometric cross-like design consisting of a central circle connected to four semicircular elements, with the inscription “Nederland” (“Netherlands”) on a ribbon below. The reverse displays a large numeral “1,” the abbreviation “Ct,” four horizontal waves, a grain ear, and the date 1943 within a curved banner. The occupation-era zinc coinage replaced earlier copper-based issues and omitted the royal portrait and insignia. The specimen has matte gray surfaces with darker discoloration in recessed areas, numerous fine scratches and abrasions, and some softening of smaller design elements. The denomination and date remain legible. Standard weight: 2 g; diameter: 17 mm. Catalogue references: KM#170; Schulman#1041.
