Name/Title

CE 1962 — British Armed Forces — £1 Special Voucher, Fourth Series

Description

Issuer: British Armed Forces Denomination: £1 Special Voucher Series: Fourth Series Date: 1962 Printer: Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., New Malden, Surrey Material: Printed paper with security thread Dimensions: Approx. 139 × 70 mm Serial number: K/1 818512 References: Pick M36a; Rosenberg-Militärgeld 74 This £1 note belongs to the Fourth Series of British Armed Forces Special Vouchers, a form of restricted military currency produced for British personnel serving overseas. Special Vouchers could be used in authorized military canteens, messes, clubs, and other service establishments rather than as ordinary civilian currency. The reverse states that the voucher was valid only in establishments authorized under military regulations and prohibited its transfer to persons not entitled to use British service canteens. Unauthorized use could constitute a disciplinary offense. Such restrictions helped maintain a separate military economy and limited the movement of military currency into local civilian and black-market exchange. The Fourth Series was printed in 1962 as a reserve or contingency issue during the Cold War but appears never to have been placed into normal circulation. Surviving examples consequently tend to show little or no circulation wear, and substantial numbers of the £1 denomination eventually entered the collector market. Cataloguing note: Although the note itself states that it was “Issued by Command of the Army Council,” specialist references classify the Fourth Series as an unissued series: it was formally produced under Army Council authority but apparently never released for actual use.
