CE 0415 - 0455 Gupta Empire, Kumaragupta I, Silver DrachmDescription
c. 415–455 CE – Gupta Empire, Kumaragupta I, Silver Drachm
Silver drachm attributed to Kumaragupta I (r. c. 415–455 CE), ruler of the Gupta Empire in northern India. The obverse features a stylized right-facing bust of the emperor. The reverse appears to depict Garuda, the eagle-like figure associated with the Hindu god Vishnu and an important emblem of Gupta royal authority, surrounded by a partially legible Brahmi inscription.
Gupta silver drachms continued the monetary traditions of the Western Kshatrapas, whose territories were incorporated into the Gupta Empire under Kumaragupta’s predecessor, Chandragupta II. These coins retained the earlier portrait-based format while introducing Gupta royal titles and religious imagery. The specimen has an irregular flan, areas of weak detail, and surface wear. The precise variety and inscription remain unverified.Create Date
