Screenprint / printed sheet from Your House Is Mine (Book & Street Project)
Artists: Vincent Gagliostro; Avram Finkelstein
Publisher/Producer: Bullet / Bullet Space, New York
This work is a plate/sheet from Your House Is Mine, a Bullet Space–produced project that existed both as a public street-poster intervention and as a limited-edition artists’ book/portfolio compiled between the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The image appropriates Coca-Cola’s advertising language—red field, white wave, and the word “Enjoy”—replacing the promise of consumer pleasure with “AZT,” the name of the first widely used antiretroviral medication for AIDS treatment. The text block at the bottom explicitly names Burroughs Wellcome and frames AZT’s toxicity, limited durability, and high cost as consequences of monopoly control and distorted public priorities, culminating in the accusatory question: “IS THIS HEALTH CARE OR WEALTH CARE?”
Catalog descriptions of Your House Is Mine situate the portfolio amid Lower East Side struggles over eviction, homelessness, and state violence, including the conflicts surrounding Tompkins Square Park. In that context, Enjoy AZT shifts AIDS discourse away from individual behavior and toward institutions—drug pricing, patents, and the political economy that governed who could access life-extending treatment.Create Date
