Undated — Gilbert Shelton, Happy Birthday, Jerry, with Fat Freddy’s CatDescription
Gilbert Shelton (b. 1940)
Happy Birthday, Jerry
Ink and colored pencil on paper
Signed by the artist
This original drawing by underground cartoonist Gilbert Shelton was made as a birthday greeting for “Jerry.” It depicts Fat Freddy’s Cat, the recurring feline character associated with Shelton’s The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, playing an accordion while singing an extended handwritten version of “Happy Birthday.”
Shelton emerged from the American underground-comics movement of the 1960s and became particularly associated with The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, whose three countercultural protagonists first appeared in the late 1960s. Fat Freddy’s Cat developed from a supporting character into a distinct comic figure and eventually became the subject of his own strips and collections.
Unlike Shelton’s published comic art, this sheet appears to have been produced as a personal presentation drawing. The handwritten dedication, musical notation, loose ink line, colored-pencil accents, and signature are therefore integral to the object rather than elements reproduced from a published comic.
The drawing also illustrates a less formal category of original comics art: personalized sketches and presentation drawings made by cartoonists for friends, collectors, or acquaintances. Such works document the circulation of comics imagery outside formally published strips and books and preserve individual variations on characters otherwise encountered primarily through reproduction.Create Date
