Libyan Desert GlassDescription
Libyan Desert Glass is a naturally occurring silica-rich glass found principally in the Great Sand Sea of western Egypt and eastern Libya. Geological evidence indicates that it formed approximately 29 million years ago through an extreme high-temperature event associated with extraterrestrial impact processes, although the precise mechanism of formation has been the subject of continuing study. Pieces typically range from nearly colorless to pale yellow or yellow-green and occur as irregular fragments within desert sediments.
