Star SapphireDescription
Sapphire is the gem variety of corundum (Al₂O₃) encompassing colors other than red, which is conventionally termed ruby. A star sapphire displays asterism: intersecting bands of reflected light produced by oriented microscopic inclusions within the corundum. Such stones are normally cut as cabochons so that the optical effect is visible across the curved surface. Corundum defines hardness 9 on the Mohs scale.
