General Notes

Note

Notes: Transcription: “One day, about a year and a half ago, a grey and white, fluffy kitten walked up the steps of the Mattapoisett Town Hall and waited by the door to be admitted. “Since then ‘Floozie’ has been waiting each week-day at 8 a.m. for the first person with a key to arrive so he can be let in. “Quite often the first to arrive is Jane Ashley, town accountant. For some reason, unknown even to Jane, ‘Floozie’ seems to have taken a liking to her office. “While Jane was talking about ‘Floozie,’ the cat was curled up on the floor in front of the bookcase, asleep — at least as asleep as a cat ever seems to get. Jane says sometimes he catches mice and leaves them on the town hall steps. “No one seems to know what he does on holidays and weekends, but on Monday mornings, as soon as he hears Jane’s car door closing, he comes running. “‘He loved to lie on the desk when he was smaller but I had to put a stop to that,’ Jane said. Now he sleeps peacefully on the window sill or carpeted floor when he isn’t sauntering quietly from office to office visiting all town employees. “‘Floozie’ was so named, said his owner Ben Handel of 18 Main St., next door to Town Hall, because ‘it followed me home from Brad’s Pub,’ a local lounge, where it used to hang around. “‘This was about two years ago,’ Handel said, ‘and the cat was given a name before I realized its gender.’” “‘Floozie’s’ owner said when it’s time to open the building, off he goes as if he had a sixth sense. ‘When Town Hall closes, he comes home.’ “There have been other ‘daily visitors’ at Town Hall over the years, commented Natalie Sullivan in the assessor’s office including a neighborhood boy who asked endless questions, and several other cats. But none has been as faithful or stayed as long as ‘Floozie.’” Status: OK Status By: Lenora Robinson Status Date: 2017-01-07
