A Maker of Figureheads
Henry Purrington, known as “Uncle Henry” to most people in Mattapoisett was 94 is March and holds the Post cane as the oldest man in that town. He is well known among the shipbuilders in New Bedford, and has chiselled the figureheads for some of the proudest ships that ever left that harbor.
His motto is “A man is as old as a [sic] feels,” and to prove this he cuts and chops a cord of wood with the ease of a man much younger.
He is a regular patron of the moving pictures, and every Wednesday, rain or shine, makes his way to New Bedford to attend the performance at a theatre. He is also an accomplished musician. Ot [sic] the outbreak of the Civil war he enlisted in the 19th Massachusetts Volunteers.
When asked his idea of how to live a long life, he replied: “I’ve worked hard all my life and never used intoxicants of any kind, or tobacco.”
He was the youngest of nine children, and outlived them all. His oldest brother died in his 90th year.
