Series of photographs of Charles H. Hiller and his oxen from newspaper or magazine. Charles Hiller, blacksmith. His shop is now William Johnson's cabinet shop. The master and his tools - fifty-six years ago Charles H. Hiller, Mattapoisett, first learned to shoe oxen, a business which he still carries on in his blacksmith shop on Fairhaven Road. New Bedford, January 15, 1928. So the ox won't kick - unlike the horse, which the blackmith trusts while shoeing its hind foot, the ox must have his fastened so he won't kick. This photograph iluustrates the two shoes on the hind foot. Frank White, Mattapoisett, is assisting the veteran blacksmith. Next! - This ancient beast of the plow patiently waits his turn to be shod as Mr. Hiller finishes another ox's new shoes. Fast in his sling - The first operation in shoeing an ox is to put the animal in a sling. Mr. Hiller despite his years, is still able to make the animal secure and confortable before the new shoes are adjusted.Acquisition
