Typed copy of Mendell notes: WSL 3/18/56, Brig "America" "Brig America, Mattapoisett, was condemned at Teneriffe, July 1854. She encountered a very severe gale of wind soon after [crossed out] sailing from home, which caused her to leak considerable, but she persued her voyage, and finally put into T, where sh was overhauled and found to be unseaworthy, being considerably strained. She aws consequently conde,mned and sold for $2500. She had on board 50 bbls sperm and blackfish oil. She was owned by R.L. Barstow, and was insured at offices in Boston and Philadelphia for $5000."Collection
