Hawaiian Sculpture - Kahi Hoakaokoa Hauoli (Happy Gathering Place)Entry/Object ID
MK_0059Description
In the serene ambiance of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, a contemporary American bronze sculpture by the renowned Bumpei Akaji takes center stage. Aptly titled "Kahi Hoakaokoa Hauoli" or "Happy Gathering Place," this remarkable piece, crafted in 1966, captures the essence of an abstracted flock of birds. Akaji's vision in bronze brings to life a narrative of avian travelers finding solace and respite at this welcoming haven of Mauna Kea. It's a harmonious portrayal of nature's beauty, seamlessly woven with the spirit of this "Happy Gathering Place."
This sculpture holds a special place within the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, as it was commissioned by a group of close Rockefeller friends who generously presented it as a heartfelt gift to Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller the year after the hotel opened. The plaque reads:
"KAHI HOAKAOKOA HAUOLI - HAPPY GETHERING PLACE
TO MARY AND LAURANCE ROCKEFELLER
WITH APPRECIATION AND ALOHA FROM THEIR FRIENDS, WHO CAME TOGETHER FROM MANY PARTS TO THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE FOR A GLORIOUS WEEKEND AND TO SHARE IN THE MOVING DEDICATION OF THE MAUNA KEA BEACH HOTEL.
JULY 22 - 25, 1965
SCULPTOR B. AKAJI
1966. "
In this artistic masterpiece, viewers not only find solace in the beauty of the birds, but also a connection to the wonders of the natural world present all around our remarkable hotel.
