Description

Big fish stories were never as rich as this gilded, elongated Thai fish. Dating back from the late 19th to early 20th century, this distinctive, gilt wood fish-shaped support, was likely originally designed for a set of gongs. The fish, elevated on a double wooden pole stand, boasts a stylized head with inset glass eyes, accentuated by colored glass inserts. A synthesis of cultural symbolism and practical design, this unique piece invites contemplation of its journey from sacred ritual to its present-day resplendence. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel, and was recently been restored and reguilded.
