Japanese Votive Horse FigureEntry/Object ID
MK_0157Description
Explore Japanese craftsmanship with this intricately carved and lacquered 19th-century shrine horse. It is one of a pair in the Mauna Kea collection.
This wooden equine features leather ears and a horse hair mane, and stands on a wheeled rectangular base, showcasing traditional Japanese lacquer saddle, stirrups, and iron ring pulls on its sides.
Blue silk reigns and yellow and orange silk tassels suspended from its bit add a vibrant touch. With a whimsical spirit, these well-muscled steeds come to life as they toss their colored tassels, rolling their eyes and champing at their bits.
This lively spectacle harks back to 18th-century festivals, where this wooden horse would have been used used to carry children amongst the festivities. Standing together in the promenade corridor of the Mauna Kea, these pieces invite you to immerse yourself in the cultural celebration they embody.
This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel, and has recently undergone extensive restoration including new lacquer and a new horse hair mane.Artwork Details
