Japanese Koi

Description

Embark on an exploration of modern Southeast Asian artistry with this pair of Japanese bronze carp. Each fish, with a plump curved body and patinated bronze surfaces, exudes a sense of elegance. The symbolism of the koi, historically revered for their ability to navigate dangerous rapids and waterfalls, reflects the mysticism of early Shintoism and signifies perseverance; while the koi themselves are also said to represent the Japanese samurai warrior. Crafted as a pair, these bronze koi serve as guardians flanking the entryway to the Manta Restaurant of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection, and in this location since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel.
