Description

Explore the elegance of the 18th-19th Century Japanese Edo period with this black lacquered keyaki wood Jizai hook. Carved from a single block of wood, its rounded hook form exhibits a worn black polish, leaving bare the wood's beautiful, natural grain. At its summit, a triangular Ebisu cap motif adds visual interest to the piece. Now part of Mauna Kea’s extensive collection of Jizai hooks, these functional yet artful artifacts were once used to hang pans and cooking utensils over hearth fires. Combining sturdy functionality with refined elegance, each Jizai hook reflects the craftsmanship and practical sophistication of the Edo period—one of the most culturally rich eras in Japanese history. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel.
