Description

This carved wooden canoe prow hails from the Middle Sepik River region of New Guinea, an area where canoes have played a vital role throughout history and up to today. In the past, large canoes, crafted from a single massive log, have served multifaceted purposes including trade, fishing expeditions, and even warfare. While canoes are no longer utilized for warfare today, contemporary carvers continue the tradition by crafting contemporary versions for trade and general transportation, in a region in which canoes continue to serve as a primary mode of transport. Traditionally, the prows of these canoes are carved in intricate designs, as is the case with the beautifully crafted openwork geometric decorating this canoe prow. Thus, this piece stands as a tangible link to the rich heritage of the Sepik River area, reflecting the enduring legacy of craftsmanship and local tradition. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel, and was very recently restored. Guests may have previously seen this peice displayed on the 8th floor of the hotel's main tower.
