Description

This exquisite 19th-20th century large hardwood bowl from the Solomon Islands, an archipelago nation in the south-west Pacific, consisting of approximately 1,000 Islands. The islands have become known for their decorative and purpose-built artefacts that converge a sense of pride in creation with precise craftsmanship. To celebrate one's status and honor the ancestors following successful raids, large feasting platters and other food containers, including bowls such as this one, were made for celebratory feasting. This piece, likely one of those celebratory bowls, boasts a meticulously carved carved geometric border, punctuated by charming roundels - characteristic of the Solomon Islands art and craftsmanship, which often features intricate designs. Within the Mauna Kea Hotel's distinguished collection of South Pacific wooden bowls, this carved piece captivates and invites viewers to immerse themselves in the rich history of South Pacific craftsmanship and tradition. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel, and was recently restored.
