Description

This contemporary Maori carved wooden canoe prow, crafted by Denis Conway and H. Ranginui of New Zealand, embodies the rich cultural heritage and artistic finesse of the Maori people. Crafted with meticulous detail, the openwork design features intricate double spiral forms enclosed within an arched frame. Below this captivating pattern sits a figure with flexed legs and a protruding tongue, embodying a formidable spiritual guardian, a protector of the vessel and its crew. Atop the prow rests a majestic manaia figurehead, exquisitely carved to command attention and inlaid with iridescent shells, showcasing the Maori tradition of incorporating natural elements into their creations. As a testament to Maori craftsmanship and cultural heritage, this carved canoe prow not only captivates with its beauty but also carries the legacy of the Maori seafaring tradition, bridging the past and the present for generations to come. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel, and was very recently restored.
