Description

Experience the artistry of 20th-century Maori craftsmanship with this oval deep bowl carved by Denis Conway, a renowed Aotearoa craftsman, in 1973. The interior reveals hand-hewn chisel marks, showcasing the careful carving process. The sides feature two curvilinear animal-form handles, with the animals’ eyes inlaid with iridescent shell, adding a shimmering detail. The base is inscribed with “Pono 1973 D. Conway,” marking the artist’s signature and the year of creation. This piece embodies the blend of traditional Maori techniques and contemporary expression, reflecting both cultural heritage and individual creativity. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel.
