Description

This beautiful floral-carved wood panel is from the renowned woodcarving center of Jepara in Central Java . Carved from teak, this motif style of heavy, dense composition features flowing acanthus-like leaves, elung (vines), and a stylized central rosette is an amazing example of Jepara craftmanship. This ragam hias (decorative ornaments) composition is typical of Javanese Jepara. Javanese carving like this often fills the entire canvas symmetrically with deeply undercut, overlapping floral relief structures along with the tightly packed, heavy floral baroque relief seen here. This treasured piece has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel and was very recently restored.
