New Guinea Food BowlEntry/Object ID
MK_0318Description
Explore the rich craftsmanship of New Guinea with this carved wooden food bowl, shaped in the form of a grand bird, seamlessly blending functionality with artistic expression.
The unique bowl features a curved beak and a deep oval body, hollowed to create ample space. Adorning the edges of the body are relief serrated bands, adding texture and visual interest. The eyes, carefully detailed, are inlaid with shell, enhancing the bowl's character and charm.
This exquisite piece, with its unique bird-inspired design, thus offers a glimpse into the cultural traditions and skilled artistry of New Guinea.
It has been in the Mauna Kea's collection since 1965, when Laurance Rockefeller developed the hotel, and was recently restored.Made/Created
